چکیده

Orientation, Navigation and Mobility are perhaps three of the most important aspects of ordinary human life. Most aspects of the dissemination of information to aid navigation and cues for active mobility are passed to humans via the most complex sensory system, the vision system. This visual information forms the basis for most navigational tasks and so with impaired vision an individual is at a disadvantage because appropriate information about the environment is not available. This project is concerned with addressing this inequality by proposing and modelling a system of mobility extensions integrated into a Personal Digital Assistant, to provide appropriate Orientation, Navigation and Mobility cues, such that current disparate technologies can be integrated into one useful system. Declaration No Portion of the work referred to in this thesis has been submitted in support of an application for another degree or qualification of this or any other university or other institution of learning.

Investigating context-aware clues to assist navigation for visually impaired people

It is estimated that 7.4 million people in Europe are visually impaired [1]. Limitations of traditional mobility aids (i.e. white canes and guide dogs) coupled with a proliferation of context-aware technologies (e.g. Electronic Travel Aids, Global Positioning Systems and Geographical Information Systems), have stimulated research and development into navigational systems for the visually impair...

An Electronic Travel Aid to Assist Blind and Visually Impaired People to Avoid Obstacles

When devices and applications provide assistance to people they become part of assistive technology. If the assistance is given to impaired people, then it is possible to refer those technologies as adaptive technologies. The main aims of these systems are substitution of physical assistants and the improvement of typical tools already available for impaired people. In this paper some benefits ...

Sensor Based Assistance System for Visually Impaired

This paper is focussed to develop an electronic navigation system for visually impaired, that makes use of sensors for obstacle detection. People who are visually impaired struggle every day in performing actions that can be as simple as moving from one point to another without falling down or knocking against obstacles. An Electronic Travel Aid (ETA) is a form of assistive technology having th...

Electronic Eye for Visually Impaired Persons

This paper presents an electronic travel aid for blind people to navigate safely and quickly, an obstacle detection system using UVC camera based visual navigation has been considered. The proposed system detects the obstacles up to 300 cm via sonar and sends feedback in form of beep sound to inform the person about its location. In addition to this, an UVC webcam is connected to 32 bit ARM mic...
